Some Important Medical Terms

Emmenogogue-------  An agent that stimulates and restores of normal menstruation.

 

Amenorrhoea--------  Absence of the menstrual flow during the time of life at which it should                                                occur 

 

Dysmenorrhoea-----   Painful menstruation

 

Expectorant--             A drug that cures cough by controlling bronchial secretion or by                                               stimulating cough or by sedating cough                               

 

Emetic---------             Drug causing vomiting

 

Diuretic------               An agent that increases urine flow and its secretion

 

Purgative---------        Causing evacuation of the bowels

 

Ecbolic-----------          An agent that increases uterine contraction and quickens delivery

 

Hypoglycemia----       Diminished concentration of glucose in the blood    

 

Renal dropsy----        The abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in the cellular tissue or in a                                                body cavity of kidney

Anasarca---------         A condition of general dropsy

 

Boil-------------------      A small area of inflammation starting in the roots of hair due to                                                            growth of  microorganism.

Skin eruption-            An outbreak upon the surface of skin, may covered with scales and                                                      contains fluid.

 

Bronchodilator-         An agent causing an increase in the lumen of the bronchial tube

 

Phthisis------               Tuberculosis of the lungs; A wasting away of the body or a part of the                                                    body

 

Stomachic----              A medicine which promotes the functional activity of the stomach

 

Laxative------              Mild purgative; An agent that acts to promote evacuation of the bowel

 

Astringent-------         An agent that contracts tissues to check secretions, allays inflammation                                             and stop capillary flow

Constipation- ----       A condition in which the bowels are opened to seldom or incompletely

 

Carminative-  ---        Drugs used to expel gas from stomach and intestine

 

Hypotension-  ---        Low blood pressure               

 

Indigestion-    ----       Lack or failure of digestion; abdominal discomfort after meal

 

Febrifuge-      ----       Remedies employed to reduce the raised temperature of the body                                                         (antipyretic)

 

Antiperiodic-  ----       Checks periodic attack of fever as in some kind of malaria

 

Anthelmintic- ----       An agent that cures helminthic infestation in the alimentary canal

 

Cholagogue-   -----      An agent that promotes bile flow from the gall bladder and bile ducts                                                    into the duodenum

 

Colic-  -------------        Abdominal pain

 

Dyspepsia--------         Disordered digestion (indigestion)

 

Alterative---------        Modifies course of ailments for the better through nutrition, metabolic,                                              activity at convalescence chronic diseases etc

Lactation-                   The period during which an infant suckles on mother’s breast

 

Eczema-                      A reaction of the skin to a wide range of stimulants or irritants causing                                               skin inflammation, redness, itching, oozing etc

Tonic-                         A medicinal preparation used to improve general health and to restore                                              normal tone of tissue

 Epilepsy-                   Nervous disorder characterized by sudden loss of consciousness, attended                                        with convulsions

Cataract-                    An opacity of eyes

 

Convulsion-                An involuntary contraction of the muscles producing contortion of the                                               body and limbs

 

Leucoderma-             Loss of pigment in areas of the skin, resulting in the appearance of white                                            patches or bands

Leprosy-                     A chronic disease, caused by Mycobacterium leprae that affects the skin,                                          mucous membranes and nerves

Psoriasis-                    A chronic skin disease in which scaly pink patches form on the elbows,                                                knees, scalp and other parts of the body

Narcotic-                    A nitrogen-containing heterocyclic drug that effects sleep and relief of                                                 pain 

 

Anodyne-                   Curative measure which soothes pain

 

Antispasmodic-          Relieving or preventing convulsions or spasmodic pains

 

Spasmodic-                 Characterized by spasms; occurring in spasms

 

Spasm-                        A sudden, violent, involuntary contraction of a muscle, attended by pain                                            and interference with function
